Scope of the meeting
The symposium will focus on innovative research activities aimed at identify, describe, assess, quantify and map the natural and human induced causes and effects of geomorphologic hazards on the natural environment and the human sphere. Landslides, snow avalanches, soil erosion, river erosion and siltation, floodplain inundation, lake filling, coastal variations and sea level rise are commonly not recognised as major hazardous processes. Their effects remain unknown, poorly studied and largely under estimated. The lack of perception is due to the generally limited magnitude of geomorphologic hazards, if compared to other natural phenomena. However, their frequency and spatial distribution make up for the low magnitude. Indeed, if a single landslide or the yearly erosion from a small plot are not so impressive as a strong earthquake or a volcanic eruption, the long term hazard posed by landslides, soil erosion or any geomorphologic hazard are very large.
Toward the end of the International
Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) the symposium is an opportunity
to critically evaluate current methods for predicting geomorphological catastrophes, for mitigating their impact and to investigate the potential of new technological advancements for improving hazard evaluation and risk
reduction.

Goals of the open forum
The forum is intended to stimulate an open discussion on the subject of the symposium as well as on any other closely related subject before the date of the symposium. We hope in this way to disseminate information and to stimulate a discussion that will hopefully contribute to a better and more fruitfull symposium. Individuals intersted in these (or related) arguments are strongly invited to contribute to the discussion. Any comment, idea, suggestion or criticism on the symposium or on any single contribution presented on these pages should be addressed to the convener as well as to all the partecipants that provided an e-mail address.
A total of 30 contributions were accepted for the symposium. Since not all of the people that submitted an abstract will be able to attend the symposium here you can find all the abstracts that were accepted.
