The Project of BAS-UNESCO had permitted the starting of the international cooperation and investigation about the expert assessment of the land subsidence in the three Balkan big cities. The previous and recent land subsidence events are studied. In each of the cases the causes of the land subsidence are putting in an interdisciplinary investigation. The causes are not only the hydrogeological, but also the engineering geological conditions, including not only the different characteristics of the soils and the rocks, but also the influence of the gravity processes, karstification, neotectonic mobility, including the seismic activity. In 1996 and 1997 two Mee tings were realized, respectively in Sofia and Scopje. Their materials were published in two volumes of Project Proceedings. The main scientific conclusions showw that in the three big cities the favour natural factors are going in combination with technogenic ones. The indicated combination provoke the increasing of the land slide effects.
The Project presents a well used possibility of Balkan scientific cooperation and it propose the real possibilities for the enlargement of the countries-participants.
